Trusting God In Uncertain Times

Let’s be honest... uncertain times can truly feel unsettling. One day everything seems steady… and the next day, something shifts. A job changes. A diagnosis appears. A relationship ends. The economy fluctuates. Plans fall through. Suddenly, the ground beneath your feet doesn’t feel so solid anymore. If you’ve ever whispered, “Lord, what is happening?” you’re not alone. The good news is that God has never been uncertain… even when we are.

Uncertainty often attacks two things: our sense of control and our sense of security. We like plans. We like timelines. We like knowing what’s next. But life doesn’t always give us that courtesy. Proverbs reminds us: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” (Proverbs 3:5–6) Notice it doesn’t say, “Understand everything first.” It says, “Trust.” Trust means moving forward even when you don’t have the full blueprint. It’s like driving at night. Your headlights don’t show you the entire highway, just the next stretch of road, but that’s enough to keep moving.

Think about Abraham. God told him to leave everything familiar: his home, his country, his comfort zone... and go to a land that God would show him (Genesis 12:1). Not “Here’s the map.” Not “Here’s the five-year plan.” Just… go. And Abraham went. That’s trust. He didn’t have all the details, but he had confidence in the One giving the direction. Sometimes trusting God means stepping into something new without knowing how it will unfold.

We live in a time where information travels fast. Social media updates, breaking news alerts, economic reports.... it can feel overwhelming. Fear thrives on “what if.” What if things get worse? What if I fail? What if I don’t recover? What if this doesn’t work out? Yet Scripture gently redirects us: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1) Notice the phrase very present. Not distant. Not distracted. Not unavailable. Present. Even when everything else feels unstable, God is steady.

Have you ever waited for medical test results? Or waited to hear back after a job interview? That in-between space is uncomfortable. You can’t change the outcome. You can’t rush the process. All you can do is wait. That’s where trust becomes practical. Instead of spiraling into worst-case scenarios, you choose to say: “Lord, I don’t know the outcome but I know You.” It doesn’t mean you won’t feel anxious. It means anxiety doesn’t get the final word.

One of my favorite stories is when the disciples were in a boat during a violent storm (Mark 4:35–41). The waves were crashing, the wind was howling and water was filling the boat. And where was Jesus? Sleeping. Not panicking, nor pacing but sleeping. When they woke Him in fear, He calmed the storm with a word. The storm didn’t surprise Him. The very thing shaking you has already been measured by God.

Trusting God doesn’t mean that you pretend that everything is fine. You can trust God and still feel nervous, still shed tears, still ask questions and still not understand the circumstances. Even David, who wrote many Psalms, poured out his fears honestly before God, but he always circled back to trust: “When I am afraid, I will trust in You.” (Psalm 56:3) Notice he didn’t say “If I’m afraid.” He said “When.” Fear may visit but trust chooses whether it stays.

Trusting God in uncertain times can look very ordinary: such as praying before checking your phone in the morning, or by speaking faith instead of fear. It could be continuing to give, serve, and love even when things feel tight, or taking the next right step, even if it’s small. It’s not always dramatic. Sometimes it’s simply making the decision not to give up.

Here’s something encouraging: God has a flawless track record. Think back over your life. There were moments you didn’t know how things would work out but somehow they did. Maybe not the way that you expected. Maybe not on your timeline. But you’re still here, still standing, still breathing, still moving forward.

Hebrews 13:8 reminds us: “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” The God who brought you through before hasn’t changed.

If you’re in a season of uncertainty right now, here are a few navigational steps:

  • Stay Anchored in Scripture. God’s Word steadies your mind when circumstances are unstable.

  • Limit Fear-Fueled Input. Be informed—but don’t be consumed.

  • Pray Honestly. God can handle your real feelings.

  • Remember Past Faithfulness. Write down moments God came through before.

  • Focus on Today. Jesus said in Matthew 6:34 not to worry about tomorrow. Today has enough on its own. One day at a time is enough.

Uncertain times are uncomfortable, yes, but they’re also powerful. Why? Because they stretch our faith. They teach us dependence. They remind us that we were never meant to carry life alone. Trusting God doesn’t mean you have all the answers. It means you trust the One who does. So if you’re in an in-between season right now, take a deep breath. God is not confused about your future nor is He is surprised by your situation. He has certainly not stepped away, even now where you are in your times of uncertainty. You can trust Him...implicitly.
